The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) has issued a stern warning regarding a cunning new scam circulating under the guise of Globe Telecom Inc. rewards.
CICC Executive Director Alexander K. Ramos explained that the scheme, which targets unsuspecting individuals through fraudulent SMS messages, operates through a deceptive domain known as globeeph.top, strategically designed to lure in vulnerable customers.
The modus operandi involves sending text notifications bearing false claims regarding expiring reward points, followed by a directive to redeem said points via a provided link.
Once unsuspecting victims click on the link, they are prompted to divulge sensitive personal information and banking details under the pretext of redeeming their points.
Ramos said this malicious tactic aims to exploit the trust of consumers, leaving them vulnerable to financial harm and identity theft.
CICC has already recommended blocking the deceptive domain, which has already been classified as a “dangerous link.”
“There is nothing to cause for alarm, but as part of the protocol, we have recommended the blocking of the domain to avoid victimizing more customers,” Ramos said. “We also want to reiterate our appeal to the public to stop clicking links from unofficial sources in order to avoid being scammed.”
Some netizens who received the scam messages said they were taken aback when they got the notice prodding them to immediately redeem the “Globe rewards” because they are Smart telco subscribers.
For those who may have fallen victim to this insidious scam, Ramos said assistance is readily available. Victims of phishing attempts are encouraged to contact 1326, the hotline of the Inter-Agency Response Center, for immediate support and guidance.
